I raised this same subject recently because I was facing much the same problem with a corpse run to a plains camp. I was told by a very helpful player that the event will just remain there until I returned to the location, where it would play out.
However...
...I wanted to see what would happen if I just left the event going, so I stayed well away from the encampment (I think it was a continent or so away), so while I geared up and tinkered around my other encampments, a new event occurred at one of the outposts we'd set up, replacing the event where my corpse was, switching it to my current location, allowing me to take a portal back to get my gear. The good sh*t. So it seems that, if you don't want to face wolves (and if you're packing anything less than silver armour/weapons-- I can understand why), you can head elsewhere and wait for a new event to occur, or buff up until you're ready to go back and face the wolfpack.
Also, Weaver's right, if you get far enough away so that your base-- everything at that location despawns, you won't have to worry about the hostiles destroying your base. That was also one of my concerns when I raised this issue. The hostiles can only damage your base/camp when you're close enough to it for the base to have spawned in. Nothing can happen to your base while no one is in it.
