My main base has 6 or 7 portals that are each assigned to a specific location around the world. When I explore a new area, I build a portal at home, carry portal materials with me, and create an end point when I reach somewhere I want to build at. I name the portals something that's easy to remember like "PlainsFarm" or "Swamp" or "Store".
