I don't remember how far back the change to terrain was but that improved performance notably. After that I haven't really noticed anything serious. For a game where you can count the pixels in the textures it really makes intense use of the GPU.
It is also still grindy IMO. Not the most I've seen in survival type games (at least food doesn't go off) but more than I'd like, especially for lack of settings. At least if you get sick of the tedious harvesting repetition in most games of this type, you can adjust it.
More importantly, multiplayer performance is still bad. Being on the same server is fine, but go near each other and you all feel lag that it seemed nobody was getting alone. It makes me miss games where I just put up with my high ping and adapt to it. This is IMO the biggest issue with it because as a single player game it's just... not all that special. I play it that way, sometimes, but the gameplay isn't really very engaging without the social element, and I say that as someone who almost exclusively plays singleplayer games.
