... if a horde attacked happened unexpectedly in the field. ...
Except for being hunted events only happen near certain player built structures (crafting stations, fires,) so all you're doing is encouraging them.
I suppose I could build just a shack with a fire and bed away from any crafting tables that I might have built. I think that would eliminate the chance for a horde event. I might have to try that.
... overnight shelter in the plains while searching for Yagluth. ...
You'll want to get used to night plains before taking on Yagluth anyway, it's a long fight and will probably go into the night.
I have plenty of experience with night on the plains, which is why I don't want to stay up every night. :-)
FWIW, I just had my first test of the shelter with a horde event. First thing in the morning, before breakfast, of course!
The shelter worked well for a while, but then I discovered it's (near) fatal flaw. A berserker can reach and destroy the stonecutter from outside the wall, which I was using to repair the walls.
Luckily I was able to drag the horde to a nearby tarpit that I had to "cleanup" anyway. That gave me a second to eat and pop bonemass. I ran around for a few minutes, doing what I could until the event ended, then cleaned the remaining up, followed by draining the tarpit.
Of course, now I can't fit all the extra black metal and tar into my inventory!
