I've done fine with Wolf armour on Plains, but I use a light shield and a knife so I attack fast.

It is slow, but the protection is worth it because the enemies hit hard.

I skip bronze in favour of sticking with troll, and then upgrade to either full or partial iron after crafting iron weapons and tools.
