I think you're on the right track. Part of the challenge, for me at least, is to wager and decide what parts to skip. Flint spear and 'fine bow' works decently in swamp and mountains. I've focused on a good shield for blocking/parrying, but mostly troll armour still. I've mined some bronze and iron for progression, but I will grind and mine silver for armour upgrades. Feels a lot less grindy this way, but also makes for some tough encounters.
