I've been messing around with it and I think that you're right. I would have figured that the building in question was way too far away to matter, and it should be, but it does seem to keep them warm somehow.

Do you have some type of fence on the top or do the chicken stay there by themselves?

I wish I could take credit, but all I did was follow the guide in this video. The only difference is that I set it up to harvest the eggs/hens myself rather than having it automated.
