Even stone walls work well as any piece of stone wall has 1.5k health and trolls only do 50-100 damage per hit. (This means while more expensive a wall made of smaller stone blocks is more durable). Just don't build anything right against the stone wall as trolls attacks can do area damage. You don't even need a solid wall, spaced 2 block high pillars will even stop trolls due to.their size.

Your link don't seem to be working properly but as far as I know workbenches can stop monsters from spawning within the build radius if there's anything else I can do that I would like to know

Also be aware these are all items mobs will target if they can't get to you/know where you are. So for example if you make torches at your outer wall you want them on the inside of the wall where mobs can't reach them/can't see them, so they don't draw aggro.
