was also thinking of bringing out 2star wolves to have an army surrounding the base. didn't even think of the deathsquitos as a reason not to bother.

you can get by with just a moat. If you use stone (my go to) all you need is one stone high. No mobs jump (yet). You can make your home wood if they can’t get over the wall or moat. Moat is a pain, has to be 2 wide and 2 deep IIRC

Skeeters won’t be deterred though. I like to build on the edge of plains to minimize that a bit. Or just have a plains island with a portal.
