Those axes are just decorations at dead ends. They don't mean anything.

Infested Mines do have secrets rooms but those are clearly marked with blue glowing runes. There are also wooden walls and vines you can break to open passages. You will come across shut doors as well that can open and those are always found at the hexagonal openings.
