I agree with this. I appreciate a good challenge, I love getting my brain to work, but I personally find that there's a fine line between healthy challenge and unnecessary stress. Something I learned in my short time with Dark Souls (I know this game is completely different) is that I, as a gamer, usually don't have the time to dedicate that much effort into progressing, and end up playing other games. I keep writing it: difficulty slider oh so needs to be a thing. Easy for the OP, Normal for us... normal people, Hardcore for the crazy people that have played it all before and think Valheim is too easy.
I think this game handles a lot well and creates a challenging environment which can be learned and adapted to. Losing items on death can be, as the OP said, will breaking, especially if one doesn't have spares or back ups. Yes, this can be used to better one's self and learn form, but in the heat of the moment, when one wanted thought, "yeah, I'll go gathering or take on these monsters," and to then be met with a loss like that can be quite defeating. I'm not far enough into the game to feel such distress, but am aware of what it's like and it can be more agonizing than motivating.
This game has challenge, and is honestly more fun in most areas than Dark Souls, but I do agree that something along the lines of difficulty customization would help give what most players enjoy from there games, and something I think this one does really well already; options. The developers are still working tirelessly on this game, it'll be interesting to see if they implement something like difficulty customization or a slider of sorts.
