I always thought of the plains as Steppe lands, like Mongolia is often pictured.

As to the mistlands, Ashlands, and far north? These are likely symbolic of Niflheim, Muspelhiem, and Helheim, 3 of the other 9 (10 counting Valheim) realms of Norse Myth.
