I can't quote any specific source at the moment, it's just based mostly on other posts scattered around and a bit on things I kind of remember from when I was considering getting back into programming as a hobby some time back (I had some ideas for games that I wanted to try my hand at) and researching how different multiplayer platforms were set up.
