The secret is to build into a natural harbor cove or golf. Massive waves are no issue there, or anywhere for me. I like them as they make it much more challenging to navigate boats in storm weather or find yourself on the beach. It does look odd in certain spots, like Plains or Meadow + storm = odd, as the waves are so big they could flood the whole plain if they kept going.
