I like build my main base in the Plains over a Fuling Village I've cleared. There's usually a tar pit nearby. A workbench is perfect for it, I don't have to worry about keeping a fire going.

That's just it... the campfire doesn't need to be lit. They seem to be ignored unlike workbenches.
