As a matter of fact, you can even create a new world and move there with your new character and then come back to the old world with that character or a new one even and your structures will still be there.

That said, the game is Early Access so it's not impossible that after a crucial update worlds have to be wiped. I'm not saying it will happen at some point I'm just saying it's something to be expected with EA games.

I doubt they will wipe worlds. Worst would be that new updates don't effect older saves.

Yeah I don't think so either. The game seems pretty stable and looks like what's left is adding content and polishing things. I said "to be expected" in the sense that you need to accept it as a possibility, not that it's probable to happen. I'm ESL so my wording is not the best.
