When I was playing with my friends we set a rule to ourselves, that it is mandatory to build a base for each biome, and each more advanced than the previous, etc meadow cabin, forest outpost, swamp tree house, mountain castle and the ultimate citadel of plain. This prolonged the lifespan of the game quite a bit, but we sill can't really play passed mountain because we all thought the game is basically over and the rest of them is to grind.
