It's just slow as a crude basic raft not meant for ocean travel. First speed is paddle, same with reverse, 2nd and 3rd are sailing but with sailing you can't go into the greyed out zone against the wind.
The next boat, the Karve, goes much faster and has 4 storage slots. You'll need fine wood for it and bronze nails.
