In short- actually that's all there is. Aside from boars and deers - only the wolves (rarely) drop a piece of 'raw meat' but it would be nuts to farm meat in such manner. Necks drop the tails and later on biome called plains You will find Lox - sort of buffallo (like GunsForBucks mentioned - it's not that starting biome - meadows).

Keep in mind that better food lasts for longer, check the descriptions of food, stuff like fruits lasts 600sec but later - You will start making sausages (duration 1600sec) or the highest tier of food: fish wraps, pudding, lox pie, serpent stew - each with duration of 2400sec (40 min).

My favorite way is simply to take few wolves on a walk into meadows and let them work for the meal but it will take You a while to get into places where You can find a wolf (also - transporting them by the sea is a whole chapter on it's own). In the meanwhile - You can try to tame some boars and start breeding them, probably best to find some tutorial on how-to.
