Let's not get wrapped around the axle about this.

As one can see, I have done quite a bit of sailing and have built a few portals. magilla666 could very well be right. My experience so far indicates otherwise. I always pay attention to the wind when I am on a boat since sailing with a tail wind or a wind from one side is much faster than rowing. Of course it is no simple task to determine which portal may be the closest on my voyages.

I can say there is not an absolute, direct relationship between wind direction for vessels and the location of the nearest portal. The wind does not always blow from the nearest portal.
Just as a viking's proximity to a creature spawn point does not guarantee a creature will immediately spawn there.

Iron Gate Studio may have spent a lot of time and effort building enough randomness into any portal influence on wind direction to make it difficult to to know for sure. I would applaud them for that while castigating them for not putting that time and effort toward finishing the game.
