Really? Digging iron is pretty quick, and at least you're exploring a dungeon with other loot.

I've heard a lot of complains about digging copper, but never iron. (Now finding the crypts yeah can be very tedious)

Most likely because scrap piles have so many parts, and whilst they don't have much hp, only 5, there's so many that you'll have to repair your pickaxe much more often than other ores.

Though i guess because of that, it increases your pickaxe skill quite a fair amount. As it's not the strength of the swing, but the amount that level your skills up.
