It's not a race. I'm almost on day 300 and still haven't killed (or tried to kill) the 2nd boss. And I haven't sailed anywhere as I'm still mapping the coastline of my first island, which I figure must be pretty big, though I've nothing to compare it to as this is my first playthrough.
