Hello :)
I am actually a game developer, haven't released anything, still in college but I would be capable of implementing the features brought out in this update, I really haven't noticed anything different apart from some food rework that seems to have reduced stamina dramatically, I think I saw some new building structures that's about all I've really noticed.
Personally, I played when the game first came out, got to Iron stage and got bored playing solo, my friends wanted to play something else, so I only started playing again yesterday with a friend. I thought it was pretty cool that there was even an update and it was made out to be a pretty substantial one.
I don't know if the developers made out that this was a huge update or if the community were just hyped but I can understand why people would be disappointed if they were super hyped for large amount of new content or whatever.
My opinion on the situation, I don't think stamina management is a very fun aspect of the game, I think exploration, crafting and progressions are what makes the game really fun. I don't understand why they made it so food now gives less stamina, it wasn't an issue and it doesn't improve the overall experience of the game, as mentioned, stamina management now feels like a bigger concept to the game and it's not a particularly entertaining game mechanic.
I waited a day for the update as I was unaware there was even going to be one. As far as reworking the food system, that could be done extremely quickly, that's just altering some scripts, could be done in half a day, less even, if it was just a case of changing the health and stamina food items give, that would take less than 10 minutes to change.
Some people have talked about waiting months for this update, I have no idea what aspects took months to create as the game seems no different apart from the food and stamina thing.
Did they add new creatures or items to the game? Designing characters/creatures can take months, 3D modelling can be a very slow and painful process... Apart from that maybe I'm just to early in the game to have felt the effects of these new updates
