Swords are amazing but you gotta have max hp to enable parrying or get comfortable with the dodge controls.

Adding recipes for higher tier bucklers would also help.

Iron can be gathered from oozers & occasional scrap piles, (search the steeper edges of swamp biomes) it won't be much but you can find enough to unlock some major base upgrades.
