Aside from earth manipulation and wall building?? Well there isn't much else, you can strategically plant trees or plant and cut them down and align them in a way that you can only pass them above by jumping, so monsters will forever run around.
Apart from breeding boars or other animals as guards, you can always build on top of trees, I have strategically planted some pine trees (extremely tall) and build on them a normal house (approx 8x6) with a few floors, so you can have different levels for different stuff (yeah it is a pain, but totally worth building for the sheer fun of it).
