I must have missed that or the crow forgot to mention it. I could only craft a couple of things and none of them was a workbench. Last thing the crow said was go find shelter and get warm, so of I trotted but couldn't find a house with a fire anywhere.

The crow tells you lots of stuff and it is easy to just click past it without reading it.

But you want to read all that stuff it is important. If you want to check what he already said you can hit Tab and click on the crow icon in the upper right. The compendium will have all his game hints that you have been given so far.
