There are separate "regions" generated within the biome, not unlike how plains or meadows have forests and fields and the like. In mistlands the splintered coastline probably presents the biggest navigational challenge, but there are also "normal" regions as well as valleys that are entirely free of mist which should appear in darker hues on your map.

Oh, I'm aware. Personally from what I have seen in about 3 worlds so far is that the proper traversable land where you'll find most structures doesn't show up as often. As in, to me it feels like the rocky outskirts are far more prevalent, leaving you only with small patches to actually explore. This could just totally be on me though, or maybe I have been very unlucky with my map generations so far.
