Consider that fishing is completely optional and is in no way needed to progress through the game successfully.

Could it be better? Sure.

Might it become better? We don't know, but there are a number of game updates to come so who knows.

And I may be in the minority, but I would rather see effort spent on new content than on improving fishing, at least in these development stages of the game.

Ultimately I would suggest instead of noting what you see as 'shortcomings' you instead present actual suggestions to improve the mechanic.
