You should not go max speed in a storm. As for the suggestion to use the longship, I just found it:

So, I stick with the karve. Much smaller and much better handling. Just can't go that fast in a storm. ;)

I'm just the opposite. I don't care about turn radius. I just want it to go where I tell it, and I find the karve way too squirrely, and almost unsailable in a strong storm.

It's also a battle tank there's only been a few times that I've felt like I had to stop to repair the ship, even after major storms, multiple sea monster attacks, daugr banging on, etc.

The only time I can think of that I had one close to sinking was when I thought I could reach a continent from a portal that I have at the bottom end of the world, and couldn't find a passage through Ashlands.

Long story short, I didn't bring any wood to even build a crafting table with, and had to abandon it when I ran out of the meager food supplies that I brought, with the ship about to sink. Luckily I eventually found a land bridge to a black forest (I think) where I was able to get some wood.

I'm not even sure I went back for it. I seem to remember one of my bases being closer than the ship.

Oh, and you can carry mats for a karve on a longship if you want to go riverboating. :-)
