Most constructions made of wood will, as you have probably observed, get water damage by rains and storms unless covered by roofs, stones, etc., or if you use darkwood as the tar will protect against said weathering effect.
However, while any wooden part that is permanently in touch with the water in the sea will start getting damaged after a time, the rounded logs will only get damaged up to a 50%.
One of the exceptions for this are, funnily enough, the stake walls, as GunsForBucks put above.
