Plains has a lot of large boulders you can use to make high enough walls to prevent raids from dealing a lot of damage to your base. Raise the ground a bit and then put up some sort of wall or fencing..

It doesn't matter what biome you're in, raids of all sorts will come your way over time. My fave is the troll raid, since its tough to stop them from smashing up your stuff.
