Yes, the Elder tends to be what seems like really far away. In the grand scheme of things he's not, but he's usually not easy to get to either.

Portals are your friend, you could prob get your corpse in few deaths and portal makes sure you dont have to spend hours getting back for new try.

Without altering the original game design ( Mods) you don't. It's a "no build" zone. You can construct a circle around it at the perimeter and build a town around it.....

Im at close to 60 hours in from only solo. I enjoy the gameplay loop ALOT even though it's repetitive. By the time I got bored from grinding a single biome I was already on to the next zone.
