Wouldn't worry about a serpent.Not a big fan of shore bases though. I used them a lot when I started to play but found it more difficult to put out good defenses as enemies just will swim around stuff..

It is a bit frustrating at the very beginning but not so big an issue as you move forward. I find watching which weapons I use also is good. I found the Spear excellent early on.

Serpents only exist in the Ocean biome, so if you managed to make a base ON the Ocean biome and sit in there, Serpent's might spawn. Otherwise they will never spawn and bother your base.

No trouble, kite as far as you can, rarely have to harpoon all that far. Most every serpent will follow for some distance, if you harpoon immediately its kinda wasted effort

I like it. Tasty mead increses stamina regen by 100%, lowers health regen by 50%. Game has everything you need. Just try not to fight much in the rain.
