Yep, yellow is overall skill, red bar is progress till next level, when you die you lose all of your red, and a few levels of yellow in each skill.Just some other skill info for you, when you look at ..

I think the red bar is progress within a skill level, eg if the red one is half full, you are halfwa through to the next skill point.
