Its well balanced this way. The things you can't do well solo are few, such as having a boat driver working with a gunner (using a bow & arrows etc) or pushing a wheelbarrow behind someone making ..

Almost all of my time in the game is solo. It's definitely fun and challenging but not overwhelming. (Just don't die on the open ocean without having the materials ready to build a 2nd boat right away..

If you don't want to start from scratch you can load up your character and bring whatever you want to the new map.
