Half of that happened to me once.I just didn't die because I punched the root trapping me until it broke. Had to log out and back in a few times to "restore" (reset) the stamina bar thou...

How are you guys even finding serpents in the first place? I’ve had one seed where I traveled the ocean for 20 minutes and ran into nothing but leviathan islands, and another seed where I couldn’t..

They've expressed interest in adding ship customization, but no evidence that it has been one of the focus points. They would have teased it in the dev blog posts by now.

Yes, it's mostly used to get serpents on shore.I find it fun to harpoon everything from deer to trolls.

i think it's mostly for dragging serpents somewhere better for a fight so you can get their loot. or for moving animals around.

To be fair, it's also completely legit to wander around as a pack of murderhobos, bring the spoils back to base and craft the best gear you can, then do it again... but that's pretty much all multipla..
