Yes, you have to kill the Elder for this Event to Trigger and therefore it is not too early and entirely his own fault.

Use arrows and run and fire, it takes a little time but Trolls are easy to kill . Then when you have a decent character you can just block and attack with sword and kill them really easy .

I bury them under floor board. As far as I can remember putting them under dirt auto destroys them.
