There are recipes that unlock when you level up your cauldron and catch the right fish. The recipes require exact UNCONVERTED fish species to make. NOT 'raw fish'. This may expand in the future.

I think it's just something to do. I only use the basic bait we had pre-update and combined with fish jumping in my boat or on shore I'm stocked up with Fish Wraps anyway.

Don't fish.It is not needed to progress so if you do not enjoy it don't do it.But many players like to fish just for the sake of fishing.
