A QL 3 bronze buckler might be able to, A banded iron shield can for sure

Like others have suggested, follow the sound. All critter sounds in the game are directional which is incredibly helpful. If this is not working for you, try playing with headphones up. My best tip.....

All right just follow the sound then ..... I'm have success with that about 30% of the time it seems - maybe later in the game I can build salt blocks and a deer stand :)

I just follow the sound. If I can't find them in ~15 seconds, they never truly existed and it was all in my head. Time to move on and kill the next one.

As you said. Black metal axe against petrified bones. Otherwise getting Iron in that area, bring over Stone cutter, and break down Dvergr structures/staircases to dungeons.

It's an impressionistic style, like Monet. Greater focus on color and light and less on realism and detail. It makes for some fabulous screenshots.
