I don't think you need a new character save.But you most likely need to start a new world for the new stuff.

For the skeleton there was no chest. It was just by itself. Not sure of Silver necklace. But I made a big hole as deep as could go and nothing else.

It pings off the chest, not the loot so you gotta bust it.

Yea that's a glitch with the wishbone, just don't bother going after valuables with it. It stops pinging properly when you strike ore.
