The best time to get the "you are being hunted" notification is when you're sailing. It's happened to me twice. I never saw a wolf and just kept on sailing.

It is really REALLY easy to snap a wooden beam, or a darkwood beam to a iron beam for added strength, you using mods, no idea what to tell you, mods can cause problems like you are experiencing.
